For those of you visiting the Canadian Rockies to photograph landscapes in the next few months, aim for early to mid-June to ensure that you’ll get lakes without ice on them. Lakes like Herbert Lake on the Icefields Parkway are often ice-free and perfect for photos by the end of May, but this year I’d say come in June to be safe, as our winter is extremely late.
For higher elevation lakes like Bow Lake along the parkway, expect the ice to last well into June.
Happy shooting!
