JASPER, Alberta – One of my buddies called me up the other day wanting to capture one of the most photographed sites in the Canadian Rockies, the famed Spirit Island. I’m always looking for exciting things to see in Jasper National Park, so of course I was up for a boat cruise along the pristine waters of Maligne Lake. On a perfect Canadian Rockies summer day, we piled into his beat up pick-up and headed towards the docks for a sightseeing adventure.
I don’t usually spend too much time on the water, so I was a bit nervous about taking a boat trip. To calm my nerves, I had a nice chat with Diane from Maligne Lake Tours before we embarked on our journey. According to Diane, “The tour is a 90 minute narrated cruise on Maligne Lake surrounded by summits 10,000 ft or higher. This area is called the Hall of the Gods.” She got me right there with mountain views, I knew I’d feel right at home.
The highlight of the tour is the opportunity to photograph the famed Spirit Island. ” Our tours stop at the docks across from Spirit Island, the most photographed views in the Canadian Rockies.” We hiked up the trail for an up close and personal look at Spirit Island. My buddy sure was excited to capture this classic Jasper National Park photo so he could put on his wall.
We were famished after the cruise and luckily for us, Maligne Lake Tours has a restaurant on its property called The View. As Diane had told me, “This isn’t your typical cafeteria food. Everything is homemade such as our soups and chili.” It was a perfect day for the two of us, filled with Jasper scenery, a relaxing boat cruise and delicious food. He better give me a copy of those photos from Spirit Island, this is a day I will want to remember.
